WRITE PATH UPDATE ~ February 2007 In Harmony With Detail
Where do my yesterdays hide? Are memories buried somewhere or are they lost forever? As the world spins faster and faster, our minds are easily distracted in a blur of frenetic activity. What is in front of us can rapidly disappear. Furthermore, teeth-gnashing about the future and hand-wringing about the past hijacks us from the present. If we do not pay attention, days will vanish with no recorded memory.
So I made this pledge to myself: I will not let another day pass without capturing some memory. I don’t want to lose the rich visual image of this morning’s moon, a huge yellow ball suspended over the city. I want to keep a mental scrapbook of my upcoming vacation. I want something more than Swiss cheese for a memory bank. Writing will help in two ways. The first is obvious – what I record in a journal remains retrievable so long as I hang onto my journal. Less obvious, however, is this. Writer’s Mind, that inquisitive, searching for detail, holds the writer and his/her mind in the present tense. Writer’s Mind shows up and stays present. It is relaxed while remaining keen on observation. Your Writer’s Mind will see “the fair-haired, blue-eyed beauty with a luminous complexion” rather than simply “a pretty girl.”
Paying attention to detail enhances more than your memory. Alert observation refreshes moods and improves your writing. Start paying attention to detail today. Check out this month’s WRITE TRY for a good beginning. Journal Writing at the Movies • We went to see “Freedom Writers” with Hillary Swank recently. The film is based on the book "The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them.” If you go, prepare for a gripping story – Erin Grunell begins as a naďve, first year teacher in Los Angeles. Dressed in sweater sets and pearls, she lurches and stumbles as she tries to teach English and Literature to hardened teenage gang members. Based on the true story of Grunell’s experience, the teacher captures her students’ attention by asking them to write in journals. The outcome is heart-warming to say the least.
After seeing “Freedom Writers” a WP writer pointed out that Anna Quindlen, columnist for Newsweek magazine, has jumped on the personal journal bandwagon. It appears that Quindlen borrowed one of my titles for her column, “Write for Your Life.” As part of her praise for personal writing, she quotes Don DeLillo. "Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see in the making all around us.” My journal allows me to express who I am and how I am different from the masses. I like that. Welcome to the Journal-team, Anna.
Journal Writing In The News Journal writing in the headlines? Yes. Did you see the Associated Press release highlighting the personal journals of space station astronauts? Indeed, researchers asked space travelers to record their inner-most thoughts and feelings while they circle the earth. Leroy Chiao, who circled the lived in the space station in 2004 and 2005 commented, ‘I used it almost as a therapy for myself . . . If I were upset about something or frustrated.” Leroy discovered what journal-writers have known for centuries – personal writing solves problems, cures headaches and moods, and improves physical health.
Save Your Mind My family genes suggests that I may live well into my 80’s or 90’s. This is a scary proposition when I also consider the family history of dementia. Can a journal prevent me from losing mental acuity? The answer is a resounding, “maybe.” Studies have shown that writing slows the progression of dementia, which is good enough for me. I am willing to put up with cranky joints and sagging skin, but I am not willing to give up my mind so to keep it intact, I am committed to the principles of Vital Longevity. One of these principles involves personal writing. You may want to make this commitment too -– before it is too late.
