What is the Write Path?
Living is a Creative Endeavor
The Write Path is a Path to Personal Knowledge -
Writing helps make sense of life and uncovers the writer’s organic wisdom. More like play than therapy, writing in a confidential group helps develop emotional flexibility, trust, and the courage to design a life that makes sense.
The Write Path is a Path to Creative Expression -
Everyone is creative, but people lose sight of their natural imagination. Write Path classes prompt the writer to take risks, make mistakes, and have fun. When criticism is absent, imagination comes home.
Two Paths - One Destination -
When a person gains self-knowledge, he or she unlocks confidence, which entices creativity back from the wilderness. Conversely, if one’s imagination is unfurled, self-knowledge and confidence follow. Regardless of which path you walk, The Write Path leads to exciting and meaningful territory.
Write Path Groups blend the effective strategies from Journal Writing and Poetry Therapy (also known as Bibliotherapy.) Unlike traditional talk groups, a writing group allows each person to give undivided attention to personal thoughts or concerns.
What Happens in a Write Path Group?
The facilitator selects a poem or excerpt from literature for the group. The group reads the selection together and shares thoughts and reactions The facilitator makes a few suggestions to prompt independent writing. Group members volunteer to share writing while the others provide a sensitive ear. Writing acts as a catalyst for finding one’s voice, intuition, and wisdom.
Write Path groups offer a supportive and confidential circle where criticism is never allowed. This makes The Write Path a unique place, very different from most writing circles, or the work place or family. In a Write Path group everyone feels “heard, really heard, ” appreciated, and encouraged.
Why Does Writing Help?
- Private writing inspires honest thought. People edit less when writing spontaneously.
- Writing is contemplative. It sparks alpha brain waves, which inspires fresh thoughts.
- Spontaneous writing relaxes the mind and generates new possibilities and solutions.
- Writing in a safe environment gives voice to authentic and original thoughts and opinions.
Individuals gain confidence to speak up, take action, and move forward in their lives.
